Stranger Things

“Blast it!” Nigel let fly a string of invectives as we left the castle behind. “Blast him! Of all the mean-spirited, small-minded, conniving little weasels! I take it back - Joanna’s perfectly suited to him. They bloody well deserve each other!” His voice petered out, his vehemence spent. “What do we do now?”

“We press on.” I shook my head. “I press on. This isn’t your fight-”

“The blazes it isn’t.” Nigel snapped. “If it wasn’t before, it certainly is now.”

“Why?” I demanded.

“Why?” He sounded incredulous. “Crispin was my friend - he was supposed to be. We relied on his help and he failed us. I’ve failed you-”

“You haven’t-”

“I have. He’s doing this to spite me. If not for me-”

“I’ve given him enough reason to be spiteful all by myself, thank you very much.”

“You have, haven’t you?” Nigel took my hand, grinning broadly. He sounded proud. Proud!

I bristled. I don’t know why. I couldn’t understand what I felt, or why I felt it, or what it meant, or what I should do about it. What do we do now? I didn’t know anything about any of this ‘we’ nonsense. I needed to think. I needed to move.

“Are you tired at all?” Nigel asked me.

“I won’t be sleeping.” I said irritably.

“Good.” His car shot forward so fast my stomach became one with my spinal column.

We came to the rise at Cormorant Cove Road that overlooked the marina. Nigel barely paused at the stop sign and went straight through the intersection.

“Where are we going?” I asked.

“The tide’s high and the moon’s full tonight.” He said. “We’re going to confirm your theory, and blast Crispin for not helping.”

“We’ll look dapper while doing it.” I tugged at my dress.

Nigel winced. “I keep a few changes of clothes on-board; it won’t be fancy, but it’ll keep you warm.”

“That’ll do.” I grinned, excitement and anticipation growing, replacing those nervous feelings I was sure now that Joanna had stirred up in me. Once I saw the infection for what it was I was able to root it out, and focus on what needed to be done. I never did like wallowing.

Nigel dug out more serviceable attire for both of us to wear, and had us underway for Hardy Point in no time. We were in that weird gloaming light where the moon was rising high while the sun hadn’t quite set, and the tall lighthouse cast a long shadow across the water. I sat at the bench beside Nigel as he steered our course, studying the maps and trying to find the most likely place to access the Channels, wondering how we would be able to find anything in the growing dark that we hadn’t found earlier in broad daylight.

“Ahoy!”

I looked up to see who called, and waved to Lister Hardy and Errol Ripley heading towards us in Lister’s father’s ancient aluminum skiff. The thing was so corroded and full of holes I was surprised it still floated.

“Friends of yours?” Nigel asked.

“I’ve known them both since high school.” I hoped they were still my friends.
